Alanis Morissette sets tried and true to new beat

For someone who's biggest hit is "Ironic," Alanis Morissette's life doesn't contain much of it.

Since 1995's vitriolic Jagged Little Pill vaulted her to superstardom and made her the feminist voice of post-grunge pop, Ms. Morissette's largely sailed the same courses. She's experimented with sonic expression with every subsequent release, yet still approaches writing music the exact same way.

She's since dabbled in acting and producing, but her oeuvre there mirrors her strong, open and opinionated persona. Personally, she's documented in song her search for respect and love, but she's still frustrated and single.

Yes, her path is a jagged one. But where's the irony in it?

Here's a possibility: The 33-year-old's upcoming CD, Flavors of Entanglement, will feature a heavy dose of dance-provoking electronica. She's not prepping to re-visit her pre-Jagged Canadian dance-pop princess years when the disc comes out on May 20, is she?

"Ha," she laughs during a phone interview from Omaha, Neb. "That would not be the case since I wasn't being very autobiographical at the time!

"There's always been a technological aspect to my music, since I've always used loops and stuff," she explains, "so it made sense for me to incorporate more this time around."

Like all of her studio work since Jagged, Flavors is lyrically based on her journal entries. This time, however, they were used mostly for context instead of ammunition. She said that the new songs were written in reaction to immediate issues instead of past ones; that, as well as the higher dollops of synthesized music, is this studio cycle's curveballs.

"I'm writing about what's affecting me at that moment instead of relying on reminiscing about something," she says. "I trust my process more now, whereas when I wrote Jagged Little Pill, I was edgy about how things would come out. Now I assume that the songs will come, and then I go out to lunch."

Her opening slot on Matchbox Twenty's current tour, which stops at Grand Prairie's Nokia Theatre on Friday, is her first earnest gesture at re-entering public life since late 2005. Before that she was constantly working, especially in her native Canada. Some speculated that subdued sales of her most recent original effort, 2004's So-Called Chaos, had cemented her disillusionment with the music industry, and that 2005's commemorative Jagged Little Pill Acoustic and a subsequent greatest-hits release signaled at least an extended hiatus from music.

Not so.

"I needed a break," she says. "I basically went off the radar, spent time in Fiji, decompressed. I was getting a little burnt out, and tending to a little personal business as well, because it needed tending to at the time." She acknowledged that she was referring to her then-engagement to actor Ryan Reynolds, which ended about a year ago.

Then, her infamously dour piano-only redux of Fergie's "My Humps" surfaced in April, and the video became a YouTube phenomenon. "I literally thought that 500 of my friends and fans would get a giggle out of it online if they happened upon it," she said. "I had no idea it would blow up to become what it ended up being."

And so the bold and provocative Alanis Morissette that so many dig is back around. But does she still matter? Actually, a better way to ask her that is "Does she care that she matters?" because she's never looked at her music as a commodity. For her, it's therapy – sharing her weaknesses is what gives her much of her strength – and a gift.

"It keeps me aligned with who I really am," she says. "When I don't speak my personal truth, I get really depressed. I don't believe in objective truth, and being able to express my version of the truth is very empowering.

"I've always considered myself a person who distills things. I think that the biggest gift that I can offer friends and loved ones is by clarifying complex thoughts into a manageable statement. I'm very fortunate that I've been able to do that for a living."
